Food For Thought!

Well, it doesn’t help that stressed is desserts spelled backwards, immediately putting the thoughts of sugar laden foods slap, bang and centre stage into our brains. Have you ever wondered why your goals for a stronger or leaner body continuously fall to the wayside or why you regularly feel guilty about your food choices? It could be that stress is affecting you in more ways than one. Now more than ever stress levels for everyone are at all-time high, at while this particular stressor COVID can impact us in ways that seem out of our control, we are not hopeless, and how we deal with stress will impact our long-term health.

Our ability to recognise our own stress levels as well as understanding what is stressing us in the first place are the first steps we can take to living the life we truly desire. We can be so quick to blame ourselves for lacking the motivation or having a lapse in self-control when we find ourselves chowing down on sugary foods for the fourth night in a row. but true health goes much deeper, takes awareness and a desire to really understand yourself. We are complex beings, with complex emotions, our emotions can and do get the better of us, and until you understand how you deal with your emotions (stress being one), you will be constantly yo-yoing in life, health and happiness. We can’t avoid stress, even though you may be doing this as a coping strategy. Having awareness of how stress impacts on your health and hormones may help you to let go of the blame tactic and choose a more positive response for you and your body.

Stress releases the hormone cortisol, one of cortisol’s functions is to help the body gain access to energy to prepare it for “fight” or “flight”, and the quickest form of energy is sugar!
